A few years later, Jon was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis. In a flash all of the things he loved to do were taken away from him. The pain was too much. Shortly after, he started experiencing panic attacks. Never having dealt with mental health challenges in the past, this was all new to him. Similar to Lisa, he had trouble finding mental health care that felt like a fit for him that was also covered by their insurance plan.

And even that would only cover 2 sessions at MOST.

Fast-Forward through a pandemic, another child, Lisa leaving her corporate job, Jon creating a mental health clothing company and raising two young kiddos, an ADHD diagnosis, coming out as queer... the idea came back around in the spring of 2022.

One in Five Project was born.

We're Jon (he/him) and Lisa (she/her) Hicks.

The idea for this project started the Summer of 2016 when Lisa gave birth to their first son. He was born 4 weeks early and money was tight. Unfortunately, Lisa was diagnosed with Post-Partum Depression & Anxiety and was desperately seeking mental health care. The only practitioner that she felt safe with wasn't covered under any benefits. She couldn't afford to pay to take care of herself.

It just didn't make sense.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help those without access to funding for mental health services (like therapy, coaching, movement, etc) receive the support they need and deserve.

Not only that, our mission is to also provide a MINIMUM of 8 sessions per applicant in order to get the full support they need.

Applications for funding will open September 2022.

How you can help...

There are many ways you can support the One in Five Project:

Who can apply for support?

When do Applications Open?

  • Applications will open in the Fall of 2022 and recipients will be notified in January 2023

How are funds allocated?

  • For the time being, funds are allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis

What will funding cover?

  • ANY form of mental health support - therapy, coaching, fitness memberships, if it helps your mental health, we will cover it.

What if I already have someone I like working with?

  • PERFECT! As long as they are a wellness based, registered business with a website, their services are covered. If you don't have a practitioner, we can send you a list of suggestions.

Are you a registered charity?

  • Not yet! The process for becoming a registered charity in Canada is complicated. We're working on it and will let you know as soon as we are.
